CalRef III - Site Updates
« on: 15 January 2017, 10:56:08 AM »

Greetings,

This is the introductory post for CalRef III. A comprehensive project to reform and update Calamity Refuge, keeping our services modern and up-to-date. These updates will continue to roll out in our development process over the next year or two. On the backend, there have already been a number of changes that improve performance and efficiency, that may not be very glamorous, but once you get used to them, you won't want to do without. Our best and flashiest upgrades and new services are still being developed, we will post to this topic when they are ready.

Let's talk about:

New Server:
Although we have talked about it before, the change has finally been done. The main CalRef server has been switched from Vanadium to Cobalt. You should notice faster load times, less lag, and more site stability. All of our services including, but not limited to, the ones highlighted in the buttons above are now hosted here.

Deprecated:
These are services that were not adequately maintained, and have been closed so we can specialise in services that are fewer, but have higher quality. This list is not fully inclusive.

Forums:
The following changes and updates have been made to the forums:
  • The Roleplay Board will now be known as the RPG Board, we welcome all types of RPG games, not just long creative writing. If you are interested in running a D&D-style campaign, feel free to use this area if you wish. There are new topic icons available in this board for these future campaigns.
  • Registration to CalRef no longer requires an administrator's approval, and you no longer need to declare the reason you wish to register here. We have switched to a valid email activation system, the account will be automatically approved immediately after activation. So tell your friends who were too scared to talk to us before.
  • The automated email system has been repaired. You are now able to reset your password, receive notifications to topics you are following, new PMs, newsletters, and more.
  • Recaptcha has been fixed, we will no longer be bombarded by Spambots
  • The forums have been updated to SMF 2.0.13, changelog here.
  • New board banners for General, RPG, and Ligrev's Lounge
  • Musicians, Dota, and Starcraft have been removed from the stock avatar list, Magic the Gathering and Geneforge avatars have been added. If you have a suggestion for another stock avatar category, PM me.
  • New files have been created for images that previously only displayed as Red Xs of Doom, if you see any I missed PM me.
  • Endless Day, Jan 21, is now recognised as a holiday in the calendar.
  • Moderator colour is now #00AA00 in the forum, this colour is now universal.
  • Yahoo Instant Messenger is no longer a profile field, if you have an idea for profile links to go along with Spiderweb() and Steam(), PM me.
  • The smilies for the forum are now the same theme as the chat.

Files:
  • Files has been rewritten from the ground up. While most of the changes do not appear on the surface, rest assured the service is faster and more reliable than ever, and no more issues with uploading files with unusual naming conventions.
  • More tokens! You can now have multiple authentication tokens in the API, for multiple devices.
  • There is an API which uses tokens so that files can be uploaded through other means than your forum cookie.
  • You can now sort items alphabetically, or take inventory through the large thumbnail viewer and delete them there without reloading.
  • Should you encounter any errors, you will receive and informative message instead of unspecified doom.
  • Sylae says it is better "in unspecified ways". That's just swell.

More updates to come.

files.calref has been updated to use SHA256 checksums instead of SHA1. Old files will still display SHA1 sums and use old URLs. Users of the JSON interface should note a new checksum_type key.

Please note that because of this change, you can in some cases have two copies of identical files in the system (one with the old SHA1 hash and one with the new SHA256 hash). For all purposes they are non-identical files in the system.

files.calref now displays file downloads on the main gallery page (note, for technical reasons you cannot currently sort by downloads. sorry!)

note that the cdn takes a bit to give us new logs (iirc aws docs say 12 hours?) and we process the logs nightly, so it could take 24 hours for info to get to the page.

edit: forgot to mention, we only started collecting log info at a certain point so

Staff records have been updated.

The CoC has been updated to version 7.4:

• Since having negative opinions of Donald Trump is now going to get you investigated by the government, CoC. 2 has been rewritten from "promotion of other illegal activities will not be tolerated." to "promotion of other extreme or violent activities will not be tolerated."

• Ch 3. No longer asks you to open a private channel, since we no longer have private channels.

• Ch 5. The time you can be inactive without being potentially stripped of your chat colour has been increased to one year.

there is now primitive support for drag-and-drop uploads in files.calref. note it's still pretty clunky, notably there is no confirmation that it is doing anything at all until the file is fully uploaded. would recommend using it for smaller files only because of that.

best to think of it as a public beta, want to see if it even works for most cases before polishing it up. lemme know what you think :)

Looks like we forgot to post this.

Money.calref has been refurbished and now displays the amount donated in the form of server hours. The number of hours for past donations has been calculated relative to the amount of money donated against the twelve money rolling average cost of running the server at the time of donation. Basically, we've done our best to calculate the accurate number of hours, even if you had a donation long ago. If you find the colour scheme to be too jarring, just refresh the page. The bar graphs receive randomised colours every time you load the page.

Just to make a public note, the CoC is now at 7.5. The changes involve making the thing smaller and easier to read with less bureaucracy and tilting the language to be more member-friendly.
